The Amish restaurant was busier than usual when Todd and Lena arrived after closing up the clinic.

Todd ushered Lena inside with a hand at the middle of her back. Partly to keep her from turning away to leave.

She’d tried to get out of the dinner briefly as they’d cleaned the exam room together after the last patient had left. She’d made an excuse that he should spend the time with his parents alone. He’d reminded her that she’d been invited and that she’d accepted.

A part of him wondered whether she had felt pressured to accept, with his parents there watching and a waiting room full of curious people behind them.

Didn’t she want to spend the time with him?

Because lately he’d found himself counting down the hours until he could see her again. She’d given him a list of three women who could go into labor at any time and the only thing he could think was, Good. Then he’d be able to spend time with her. Even working by her side was enough to light up his entire day.

“There they are.” He nodded his head toward the booth against the restaurant’s back wall. Mom must’ve been watching, because she waved at them, her expression bright and excited.

He and Lena began threading their way through the other tables toward Mom and Dad.

A booth was intimate. It meant sitting closer than they would’ve at a table, thanks to Mom and Dad already sitting on one side.

He squelched the sneaky joy that rose inside him at that thought.

When Lena had scooted in to the booth and Todd had sat down beside her, Mom reached across the table to squeeze his hand.

“I’m glad you could make time for us,” Mom said. “We didn’t meant to interrupt your date night.”

“Oh, we’re not dating,” Lena rushed to say.

He’d recognized Mom’s way of fishing for information, but Lena’s quick refusal still pinched.

He affected a casual smile. “We’re—”

“We’re coworkers,” Lena said at the same time.

“—friends,” he finished a beat after her. The word seemed to echo in the sudden silence over the table.

Lena caught his questioning glance even as her fingers played with the edge of the silverware lying on the table.

He didn’t want her to be nervous. So he nudged her foot with his beneath the table, where no one else could see.

He winked at her.

“Lena took pity on me when I first arrived,” he said to his parents.

“I didn’t take pity on you.” Her words were shy and her eyes downcast, but he sensed her relaxing the slightest bit.

“No, I guess not.” He tipped his head toward his dad. “She called me out on my bedside manner.”

Dad chuckled. “Gotta like a gal who gives it to you straight.” Dad tapped the menu on the table in front of him. “Do you need a minute to look over this?”

“No, I like the potpie.”

“The potpie is his favorite.” Lena’s words overlapped his.

If they had been trying to convince his parents there was nothing between them, they’d failed.
